The Grandma Jacket, Sage Quilted

My grandma had a little quilted windbreaker for every season. A pink one she wore everywhere, and green, always green, because she loved it. When the weather started to turn to fall, she'd throw one on before she headed out. It lived on the coat rack by the back door, along with her light gloves, my grandpa's hat and the other jackets.

Her pockets always held the same things: Carmex, Kleenex, butterscotches and Werther's caramels. Reach in and you'd find something sweet.

When I found these, new with tags at a thrift store, I bought the whole bunch. They looked just like hers.

A soft sage quilted jacket with a collarless neckline, olive piping along every edge, snap front and three roomy patch pockets. Never worn, rescued before they ever saw a closet, and ready for someone to fill the pockets with their own little treasures.

Pin a peony to the pocket. Knot a silk scarf at the neck. Hang it by the back door.
